چکیده
In this note we wish to complement some recent work in the cosmological literature concerning the Weyl conformal curvature tensor and its parts. In particular, we shall give a clear–cut definition of the Newtonian limits of electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. We also discuss that only a subset of the relativistic equations is needed to obtain a closed system of equations in the Newtonian limit. PACS: 98.80.Hw, 04.20.Cv

Lagrangian Evolution of the Weyl Tensor
We derive the evolution equations for the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor for cold dust from both general relativity and Newtonian gravity. In a locally inertial frame at rest in the fluid frame, the Newtonian equations agree with those of general relativity. We give explicit expressions for the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor in the Newtonian limit. In general, th...
متن کاملConformal mappings preserving the Einstein tensor of Weyl manifolds
In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a conformal mapping between two Weyl manifolds to preserve Einstein tensor. Then we prove that some basic curvature tensors of $W_n$ are preserved by such a conformal mapping if and only if the covector field of the mapping is locally a gradient. Also, we obtained the relation between the scalar curvatures of the Weyl manifolds r...
متن کاملIs the Hawking Quasilocal Energy "Newtonian"?
The Misner–Sharp–Hernandez mass defined in general relativity and in spherical symmetry has been recognized as having a Newtonian character in previous literature. In order to better understand this feature we relax spherical symmetry and we study the generalization of the Misner–Sharp–Hernandez mass to general spacetimes, i.e., the Hawking quasilocal mass. The latter is decomposed into a matte...
متن کاملEquations of Gravitational Instability Are Non-local
Few recent generations of cosmologists have solved non-local newtonian equations of the gravitational instability in an expanding universe. In this approach pancaking is the predominant form of first collapsing objects. Relativistic counterparts of these equations contain the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. In the linear theory the magnetic part is associated with gravitational ...
متن کاملGravitational Instability of Cold Matter
We solve the nonlinear evolution of pressureless, irrotational density fluctuations in a perturbed Robertson-Walker spacetime using a new Lagrangian method based on the velocity gradient and gravity gradient tensors. Borrowing results from general relativity, we obtain a set of Newtonian ordinary differential equations for these quantities following a given mass element. Using these Lagrangian ...
